Diet & Nutrition

Feeding your Maine Coon a healthy, balanced diet is one of the most important ways you can support their growth, wellbeing and magnificent size. Maine Coons grow slowly and steadily, often not reaching full maturity until around 3-4 years of age, so good nutrition from the very beginning really does matter.

What We Feed Our Kittens

Our kittens are raised on a high-quality, meat-based diet since cats are obligate carnivores, that supports strong bones, healthy joints and a glossy coat. We focus on foods with a high animal protein content and minimal fillers, as Maine Coons thrive on diets that closely match their natural needs.

When your kitten goes home, we provide full details of what they are currently eating. We strongly recommend continuing this diet for the first few weeks to help your kitten settle comfortably into their new home.

Transitioning to New Foods

If you wish to change your kitten's food, this should always be done slowly and gently over 7-10 days. Gradual changes help avoid upset tummies and allow your kitten to adjust without stress. A sudden change in diet can cause digestive issues, especially during the already busy settling-in period.

Feeding as They Grow

Maine Coons have big frames and long growth periods, so their nutritional needs change over time:

  • Kittens benefit from frequent meals rich in protein and healthy fats.
  • Adolescents need sustained nutrition to support ongoing growth.
  • Adults do best on a balanced diet that maintains muscle while preventing unnecessary weight gain.

Fresh water should always be available and many Maine Coons enjoy drinking from a running source, such as a fountain or even the tap!

Treats & Extras

Treats are lovely for bonding and training, but should be given in moderation. Choose natural, meat-based treats and avoid foods containing sugar, grains or artificial additives. Human food should be avoided unless specifically recommended as safe.

A Note on Individual Needs

Every cat is unique. Activity levels, metabolism and personal preferences all play a part in determining the 'perfect' diet. We're always happy to offer guidance if you're unsure or need help finding what works best for your Maine Coon.

Feeding your cat well is a wonderful way to show love and with the right nutrition, your Maine Coon will grow into a strong, healthy and happy companion for years to come!
